Warm Floors and Mould/Mildew Free Foundations with the LEGALETT Foundation Radiant Floor Heating System,

Promote Healthy Indoor Air Quality and a Healthy Living Climate.

INTRODUCTION

Livingroom cutout

The Air-Heated LEGALETT Foundation
Pipes are cast into the concrete slab through which warm air is circulated through a heating unit. With the aid of a fan, the warm air travels through the pipes heating up the whole floor/foundation.

The system is simple, safe and economical!

The only ICF foundation system in North America!

Warm Floors!

No Moisture or Mildew!

The LEGALETT Radiant In-Floor Heating system.

  • Uses air as a safe heating medium.
  • Provides an even, comfortable healthy indoor climate.
  • Eliminates drafts, cold areas or hot spots.
  • Saves energy.
  • Is reliable, simple and safe.
  • Eliminates all risk of damage from moisture and mildew.
  • Offers major advantages during construction.

Temp Stratification

The Natural Way of Heating up a House.
It J ust Makes Sense!

Warm air is lighter than cold air and therefore rises. It is only logical that warm floors provide even comfortable heat in the whole room. An ordinary radiator or baseboard heater gives off a lot of heat, which quickly rises to the ceiling. The heat must be "forced" down towards the floor if you are to avoid cold feet. With the even heat distribution of the LEGALETT heated foundation, the indoor climate is extremely comfortable.

LEGALETT supplies air-heated floors.  Our slab on grade design provides unique advantages for the building and building process.  Air-heated floors are available, also, for basement and 2nd   and 3rd storey pours.

The LEGALETT Slab on Grade System Is Essentially Two Building Systems In One:

The Foundation and the Heating System

Engineered slab

The foundation is the engineered structural concrete slab.

  • It floats on a double layer of rigid polystyrene.
  • It rests on a well-drained layer of crushed stone.
  • The Slab On Grade design is engineered for frost protection.

Piping network

The heating system is a network of pipes from a furnace box that is cast in the slab.

  • It distributes the heat from the heating source evenly throughout the house.
  • There are no drafts, cold areas or hot spots.
  • The heated slab will typically be a couple of degrees above the ambient temperature of the room.
  • It will gently radiate its energy to the occupants of the building in a low intensity, comfortable, efficient manner.
  • The slab can also passively absorb energy from the daytime sun and distribute it at night, reducing the amount of purchased energy required.

The slab is always warmer than the soil and crushed stone.

  • Thus moisture migrates downward and away from the building.
  • The warm slab also inhibits static electricity and dust formation.
  • Dust is further reduced when filtering the incoming and any re-circulated air.

Warm air can be blown through the slab immediately after it is poured using a construction heater allowing extension of the construction season.

  • The slab dries out quickly.
  • Breeding places for moulds and fungi never occur.

All functions of the system are controlled by simple wall mounted controls.

  • All mechanical components, including the single moving part (the fan), are contained within the furnace box, which sits flush with the slab surface and is easily accessible.

COMPONENTS OF THE LEGALETT SYSTEM

SLAB

Perry slab pour

  • Provides the structural integrity.
  • Provides the enormous heat sink that is used to buffer the interior temperature of the structure.
  • Reinforced to carry loads of interior and exterior walls, as well as roof.

piping

EDGE ELEMENTS AND INSULATION

Edge element

  • Provides the durable and decorative exterior covering.
  • Provides the stay-in-place formwork.
  • Provides the insulation to insulate the slab from the outside elements.

EPS Insulation

FURNACES

Heater box

  • Heats the air, which circulates through the system.
  • There are two general types;

-         Water Coil Units and

-         Electric Units

Water Coil Units

  • Very simple in design.
  • Contain a water/air heat exchanger to distribute the heat from the heat source (hot water tank, boiler, etc.) to the air in the pipe system.
  • Contains a fan to move the air.
  • Simple thermocouple turns the fan on and off as demanded by the supply of hot water to the unit by the thermostat.
  • Uses internal valving for control, as well as the external heat source to provide the heated water.

Water coil unit

Electric Units

  • Contains electric heating elements and a fan.
  • Simple in overall function.
  • Only requires electricity to heat the air directly with the heating elements.

Electric coil unit

Heater Unit Control

  • Up to 4 heating zones per unit.
  • Simple wall mounted programmable thermostats.

All moving and mechanical components are contained within the furnace box.
Furnace boxes can be easily opened and accessed for maintenance, as required.

PIPING

Closed loop piping

  • Choice of 2” or 4" diameter pipe.
  • Closed loop piping carries the warm air throughout the slab system.

No outside air enters or leaves the system.
No air is blown around in the living area of the house by the LEGALETT System.
Drafts and overall air movement is reduced to simply what is required for healthy ventilation as   provided by a heat recovery ventilator or similar system.

Basement, frost wall, 2nd and 3rd storey applications are possible!
